What is acne?

Acne is basically a skin condition where there is a blocked pore. Blockage is usually caused by oil and dead skin cells. It is characterized by whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, and nodules. It appears mostly in the face, forehead, neck, chest, upper back, upper arms, and shoulders.

It is the most common skin condition. It affects almost all teenagers during puberty when the sebaceous glands are most active, but it can occur at any age. Both male and female are affected.

Acne is not a dangerous skin disease. However, it can leave skin scars which can become aesthetically unpleasant.

What causes acne?

Acne is caused by the following:

  • Hormones – Specifically during puberty, teenagers start to have an increase in hormone production. One of the hormones which is highly produced during this stage in life is the androgen. Androgen is a male sex hormone that includes testosterone. Testosterone in turn makes the body to secrete more sebum, an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands. Sebum does not cause pimple but if it is trapped underneath the skin surface, that’s when you get acne.
  • Food – High intake of carbohydrates increases the blood sugar quickly. As a result, it triggers insulin levels to rise. Insulin stimulates action in the oil glands which can promote acne-causing cell growth.
  • Cosmetics – Some of the ingredients in cosmetics can trigger acne. Choose skin care products which are labeled noncomedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores. Choose water-based or oil-free products. This will reduce the likelihood of buildup of sebum and bacteria which causes acne.
  • Lifestyle – Increased water intake, getting enough sleep, and physical exercise are among the healthy routines that helps you become less acne-prone.

Home Remedies

Acne treatment depends on the severity of the skin condition. But commonly, they can be treated with home remedies. Most of the remedies available is to lessen and reduce oil and to mildly treat the bacteria causing the acne.

  • Exfoliating masks and cleansers help free and open the pores
  • Retinols which helps promotes skin peeling and open the pores
  • Washing with mild cleansers once or twice a day can keep the skin clean and less sensitive to irritation
  • Astringents or toner wipes away the oil
  • Antibacterial cleansers such as benzoyl peroxide
  • OTC medication such as Oxytetracycline which is an effective medication to fight the acne-causing bacteria (to know more about the product, https://www.ukmeds.co.uk/treatments/acne/oxytetracycline/)
